Gwar on Fallon

Gwar played I think the only TV appearance they've ever played. It wouldn't surprise me if it was at least. If you don't know about Gwar they are a metal band that wear ridiculous costumes on stage. Its all in good disgusting fun I guess.

Doves

I have to admit. I was and still kinda am a Coldplay fan. If you hand me "Parachutes" or "A Rush of Blood to the Head" I can listen to them and get pleasure out of the experience. What if I was to tell you that there is a band that exists that has a similar sound to Coldplay but has a more ambitious sound and more talented musicians? Well that band exists and they are called "Doves"

My love for the Doves came in 2002 when I saw the video of their song "There Goes the Fear" on the Internet. I was almost instantly hooked. I was a huge Coldplay fan at the time and was really latching onto anything in the same genre / vain as the band. This to me was like Coldplay with the sound of that the, at the time, indie British feel or at least I thought that's what it was. It wasn't long before I tried my best to own everything that the Doves had done to that point so I promptly went to manifest and purchased the albums "Lost Souls" and "The Last Broadcast"

"Lost Souls" is the first full length album by Doves and its a perfect starting point. Its probably their most experimental album which is odd because its their first. If you listen to "The Last Broadcast" first as I did you would understand why. "Lost Souls" is very well put together and has great instrumental parts but unlike Broadcast they vocals aren't as prominent. Almost as if they were an after thought. This isn't a band thing, its just different from what they've done later on in their career's. The music itself is very atmospheric. It draws you in with this haunting melodies. I swear it almost feels as if your listening to the most beautiful horror movie sound track not because its trying to scare you. Its just very unsettling, but settling at the same time. Its hard to really capture in words what its like to experience "Lost Souls" but if I had to I would in the way that people say you have to experience Pink Floyd or Grateful Dead. With a loud stereo and no one to bother you. You can skip the acid part, its not the 70's anymore.

The second album by Doves is "The Last Broadcastand it improved upon the sound that Doves had set with their first release. It wasn't a drastic change, but the songs did have more structure and depth. "The Last Broadcast" was the first album I had listened to in its entirety and loved with the first play through. I remember like it was yesterday how it felt to instantly be impressed by something. "The Last Broadcast" featured many great songs but the one that gets me every time is called "Caught by the River". Its one of those songs that just gets in your soul and makes you want to sing your troubles away. It shines for me as the best song by Doves and one of my favorite songs of all time. "The Last Broadcast" is a great example of a band teasing the greatness that was soon to follow. Its a shining accomplishment that needs to be appreciated more.

Becoming The Archetype

Becoming The Archetype is one of the best "Christan" bands on the planet right now. They blend the heaviest of vocal styles and death metal with the intricacies of progressive metal. They've grown and matured throughout their extensive run making noticeable changes to the musical direction with every album. While most of the time the changes worked, sometimes they didn't to a nasty degree. Unlike other bands who tend to continue on the path of suck, Becoming The Archetype moves forward and doesn't look back.
The first time I heard this band it was 2004 and i was in a transitional phase in my musical maturity. I was starting to understand that heavy was king and that rap rock with going the way of the dinosaurs and also that there were killer Christian bands out there to listen to. Those bands most notably "Norma Jean" and "Haste the Day" were on the label "Solid State" which is an off shoot of "Tooth and Nail" records. Solid State allowed bands to make great music without having "Christian" lyrics and also seemed to give the bands creative control. Becoming The Archetype was one of the bands on Solid State and they had just released they're debut album "Terminate Damnation". It was unlike anything I was listening to at the time. Super heavy, mixed incredibly well. It remains to this day one of the best if not the best albums released on Solid State.

After "Terminate Damnation" came the less exciting "The Physic's Of Fire" which in my opinion is the worst album by far. They tried too hard to build upon the sound of the first album by adding weak singing vocals, which at times bordered on painful. The album was also mixed horribly, with a noticeable difference in the arrangeable of the band. The sound of the album feels hampered by the ever present gargling of the bass. Its hard to put into words. There were good songs on the album and if would be great to get a release with cleaned up vocals and a better mix. It was a disappointing addition to they're catalog but we didn't have to wait long until the next album.

Not sure if I hate this...

This song is by a band called "The Drums" original I know. I can't believe that name wasn't already taken. The songs called "Me and the Moon" and of course they are a 80's sounding band and this video reaks of the 80's. Lazy vocal work but for some reason I couldn't stop listening to it. Give it a listen and maybe you'll be entranced as well.

Holy crapballs Batman!!!

This might be the worst song ever given more than four dollars to be made into a music video. The lyrical content alone is laughable, but its the gal of this little gay kid to dance in front of a camera and think he looks cool. What a twat. I take back all the "This is the gayest thing I've seen..." statements. Seriously...... I dare you to watch more than 30 seconds. You can't do it!!!

When Metal Goes Wrong....

... I've not heard of this band until today. "Angra" from Brazil. Apparently I'm suppose to care that they have a new album coming out. At least the 4 post on my Google reader would tell me that. Well heres the video for "Lease of Life".... gay?

A Perfect Circle, not new but still awesome.

I love A Perfect Circle, well everything but that "emotive" bull crap political album. I feel like Maynard James Keenan's vocals are perfect for the style of music. Its not over saturating with trying to be artsy like "Tool". Well they just announced that "APC" will be recording a new album due out in 2011. Here's to hoping that they do something original and stay away from the John Lennon covers!

Deftones new video

I swear this is the worst song on the new album "Diamond Eyes". I'm sure you'd agree that if it is the "worst" the album must be freakin epic??? Hell yes! Enjoy "You've Seen The Butcher"!!

New VVFS

Yay!!! Something to make people laugh... and me. This has been a dull couple of days. I'm working on some reviews and some other things. Now enjoy this new episode of VVFS....
