Sumeriancore is my new favorite genre of metal. What is sumeriancore? Well basically its progressive metal, but the bands that are consider to be sumeriancore are all on Sumerian Records. The style of music basically pits the best parts of breakdown metal with the musicality of progressive music. I don't really love to categorize metal since I feel metal is metal no matter what spin you try to put on it. What does this have to do with After the Burial? Well they are on Sumerian Records.... that's about it. So lets drop the crap and talk about "In Dreams"
One of the things I love about "In Dreams" is how it never lets up. Its a ride from start to finish with barely a breather from the onslaught of metal goodness. After the Burial only uses the progressive styling of their music to accent the core songs rather than to display their talent as musicians. That's something that is definitely starting to die out. I love ten minute songs but sometimes I just want 4 minutes of a metal frenzy! "In Dreams" is chalk full of head banging tunes. At times they even seem to channel metal veterans Meshuggah, in fact the rift in the song "Encased In Ice" could have been from a Meshuggah B-side. The album clocks in at about 35 minutes which I feel is a good pacing for an album of this type.
If you want to get your face rocked look no further than After the Burials newest effort. Check out Sumerian Records other artist if you dig them.
